Subject: Collector's Corner..In Honor Of The Good Men At Kaufbeuren..

Author: Steve B

Date: 13:22:27 10/22/05

Who even now ,as we speak, are duking it out this weekend at the Fall Classic..

i elected to play a couple of games featuring two high end computers that will
also be in competition at the tournament:

The Mephisto Tournament machine equipped with the Vancouver 1991 World Champion
program
the TM runs on a 68030 Processor at 36 Mhz
legend has it that only 25 units were made but i have heard estimates as high as
 50
Rated at 2225 Elo,it was a real Champion in its day and featured two built in
cooling fans to keep the machine from melting its own circuits:

and the Phoenix Resurrection loaded with the Toga 1 Engine
the Resurrection-Fruit 05 is now quickly becoming generally accepted as the
strongest dedicated chess computer ever released but the Toga 1 engine has yet
to see battle in public:

in the games the TM achieved ply counts of 5-6 typically with the RT1 reaching
10-11

both games were Game 60 minutes:

GAME 1-DRAWN

in the game the RT1 is out of book at move 11

[D] 3b2k1/1q3pp1/2n1p2p/3pP3/Qp1P4/1N2B2P/5PP1/6K1 b - - 0 34

the TM down a pawn ,sets up a classical blockade of the passed pawn with its
Knight

the RT1 struggles to break the blockade..to no avail..

34.. Be7 35.Kh1 Qc8 36.Qb5 h5 37.Kg1 Qa8 38.Bc1 h4 39.Kh2 Kh7

FINAL POSITION
[D] 4q3/4bpk1/2n1p1p1/1Q1pP3/1p1P3p/5N1P/3B1PP1/6K1 w - - 0 54

not all that interested to sit there and watch the 50 move rule come into play
in another 30-40 moves i called the game a draw here

i am fairly certain there is a win for black with the Queen occupying the A file
and pushing the pawn through ,but i guess the RT1 cant find a winning plan at
this time control

the second game was not as easy for the TM
taking the Black pieces it defends with the Trompowsky (Russian Game ) but
falls prey early on to a nice Knight sac by the RT1
the RT1 was out of book first at move 10:

GAME TWO -RES TOGA 1 WINS:

[[Date "2005.10.22"]
[Round "2"]
[White "RES Toga I"]
[Black "Mephisto Tournament Machine Van-030 "]
[TimeControl "GAME -60 MIN"]
[Result [1-0]

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.d4 exd4 4.e5 Ne4 5.Qxd4 d5 6.exd6ep
Nxd6 7.Nc3 Nc6 8.Qf4 g6 9.Bd2 Qe7+ 10.Be2 Be6 11.O-O Bg7 12.Bd3 O-O
13.Rfe1 h6 14.Rad1 g5 15.Qg3 Nb4

16.Nxg5 !

[D] r4rk1/ppp1qpb1/3nb2p/6N1/1n6/2NB2Q1/PPPB1PPP/3RR1K1 b - - 0 16

the TM never even considered this move and indeed evaluates its position as
ahead by +1.36

16.. hxg5 17.Bxg5 f6 18.Bh6 Rf7 19.Bg6 Re8 20.a3 Nc6
21.Nd5 Bxd5 22.Rxe7 Rfxe7 23.Bxe8 Nxe8 24.Bxg7 Rxg7

25.Qe3

[D] 4n1k1/ppp3r1/2n2p2/3b4/8/P3Q3/1PP2PPP/3R2K1 b - - 0 25

the smoke clears with the RT1 up a Queen and two pawns for three minor pieces

even now the PV'S of both computers are widely disparate, with the TM thinking it
is down about -1.5 and the RT1 thinking its up about +3.5

25.. Re7 26.Qf4 Re5 27.Qg4+ Kf7 28.Qd7+ Ne7 29.f4 Bc6

FINAL POSITION
[D] 8/5k2/3r2b1/2pPQ1P1/4n3/P7/1P4R1/6K1 w - - 0 62

here the TM Resigns

Kaufbeuren Regards
Steve
