You are right, programs should not be handicaped, by removing part of them, when
testing them for strenght. I understand why people want to test the core of the
engine separately : they want to know the strengh of the engine that will
analyze their game (For that task, opening book and such techniques are worth
nothing).

If I ever release my engine I will do it in two version :

MatMoi - User Friendly version
o Book / learning can be disable
 o Parameters can be tweaked
 o personalities can be changed

MatMoi - Professional Version
o Opening book is on. The engine will refuse to run if it can't find its
opening book
o Learning can't be turned off
o Only one personality avaible (The one I find is the best)

The licensing will require tester to specify wich version they use when they
report results.

One of the strenght of Crafty his is book learning. I find it unfair when this
is turned off when testing. It's no longer Crafty that is playing, but an
handicaped version of it.
