Unless you're one of those freaks that enjoy that sort of ting, computer chess
is definitely a waste of time. No programmer has ever made his fortune making
chess programs, and i suspect no one ever will. In my opinion, this is a good
thing: The free exchange of ideas and generous community spirit on forums such
as this one would be impossible if we were in it for the money, and progress
would be a lot solwer if we all kept our ideas to ourselves. It would also be
less stimulating intellectually, and dry spells of creativity would be more
common. More of us would give up before our projects even reached fruition. So
from a strictly financial point of view, you're right: We're wasting time, and
thank God for that!
