First off, this may have happened with his first few opponents, but when he consistently started to win, the rest of his opponents would have taken him seriously. Secondly, at the IM and GM level, you do not get there if you do not take every opponent seriously. Anybody can get lucky and find a game winning move if their opponent is not constantly diligent.
