You need to benchmark the _specific_ program you are interested on. Each program can have a different "cache footprint". The main place this might help is in cases where the program's basic cache footprint is >512kb, and < 1024kb. Stretching the cache to 1024kb would allow the important pieces of program to sit in cache where they could not on a 512K chip...
