There is no ambiguity: Using SMK's simple notation: [d]2k5/8/8/8/8/8/8/RR1K2RR w GA - You will set A and G column rooks for castling. As straightforward as it gets. Using Scharnagl's notation (X-FEN) can be a bit more complicated, but there is still no problem. Eg: [d]2k5/8/8/8/8/8/8/RR1K2RR w GQ - This will use the G column and outmost queen rooks for castling, i.e. the A-column rook. Notice that the kingside castling right is, in this case, identical to SMK's notation, and the K disappears. If both castling rooks are the inner ones, then the X-FEN should look exactly like SMK's: [d]2k5/8/8/8/8/8/8/RR1K2RR w GB - With X-FEN, If both castling rooks are the outmost side ones, then instead of using column letters, K and Q must be used: [d]2k5/8/8/8/8/8/8/RR1K2RR w KQ - I've implemented both method in my engine, and SMK's one took me a few minutes, whereas the X-FEN took me a whole evening to consider exceptions and test them. Both work, though. This is only my personal opinion for those interested. Regards, Jaime
