The playing programs do indeed ask for the cd from time to time, but not often. I'm not sure if it is after "x" number of uses or after "x" amount of time. When running Gambit Tiger 2.0 under Chessbase (the database program, not the playing program such as Fritz, Chess Tiger 14 - 15, etc.)as an analysis engine, for whatever reason should the program request the cd, and the cd (CT 14) is inserted, it will claim that it is not the original cd. I have to switch to the the playing program, insert the cd, and only then is it accepted. An annoyance - but this has only happened maybe 3 times since I've owned CT 14.
