This is something i have thought about for a while. The idea to have an open scource program i guess is so people can learn how the structure of a chess program works, through a practical example and to provide some insights into some of the deeper aspects of how it all works. Now for me atleast i think that Crafty has been such an example of the above and wouldn't it be time for it to not be open scource anymore? I mean people should be able to get from it (legally) what they need from previous open scource versions of Crafty right? It would be very interesting to see if it would have any detectable impact on the computer chess community as a whole if Crafty was not open scource anymore and to see if Crafty would do better in tournaments in the future. Now this, like the header states, is just an idea and it might be for completely different reasons than i can fathom that Bob keeps Crafty open scource, but it would make for a nice experiment :) Regards Jonas
