Neither. I am always using std::getline(std::cin, some_string) to read, and while I am thinking I use select() to check if there is input to be read in the standard input. If I am the only one with the problem, it's probably me doing something wrong, although I am running out of ideas of what to try. I think I will write a little proxy that opens my program with two pipes, so I can see exactly how things are flowing (with Perl's open2 this should be easy).
