The move Qd8 seems to be the best but Qf5 is not far behind at all. So it's possible an engine might choose Qf5. Here's analysis from Shredder 9.1 UCI at a depth of 14 ply (to claim a particular move as best we should verify it with the strongest analysis possible): 5k2/6p1/pp5p/2bQ4/8/6P1/PP3PKP/2r5 w - - 0 1 Analysis by Shredder 9.1 UCI UCI: 1. +- (7.38): 1.Qd8+ Kf7 2.Qc7+ Kg6 3.b4 Bxb4 2. +- (6.67): 1.Qf5+ Ke7 2.Qe5+ Kd8 3.Qxg7 Re1 4.Qxh6 Ke7 5.Qh4+ Kf8 3. +- (5.78): 1.Qa8+ Kf7 2.Qb7+ Be7 3.Qxb6 Rb1 4.Qb3+ Kf8 5.Qc2 Re1 6.Qc8+ Kf7 7.Qxa6 Re6 8.Qb7 4. +- (5.50): 1.Qf3+ Kg8 2.Qa8+ Kh7 3.b4 Bd6 4.Qe4+ g6 5.Qe3 Rc6 6.Qd2 b5 7.Qd5 Rb6 8.Qf7+ Kh8 9.Qxg6 5. +- (5.27): 1.Qe4 Ra1 2.Qa8+ Kf7 3.Qxa6 Kf8 4.Qc8+ Kf7 5.Qd7+ Kf8 6.Qe6 Rd1 7.Qc8+ 6. +- (5.27): 1.Qd2 Ra1 2.Qd8+ Kf7 3.Qd5+ Kf8 4.Qa8+ Kf7 5.Qxa6 Kf8 6.Qc8+ Kf7 7.Qd7+ Kf8 8.Qe6 Rd1 9.Qc8+ 7. +- (5.01): 1.b4 Be7 2.Qa8+ Kf7 3.Qxa6 Rc6 4.a4 Re6 5.a5 bxa5 6.Qxa5 Kg6 7.g4 Bxb4 8. +- (4.80): 1.a3 Re1 2.b4 Be7 3.h4 Rc1 4.Qb7 9. +- (4.72): 1.Qb7 Re1 2.b4 Bd4 3.Qb8+ Ke7 4.Qc7+ Ke8 5.Qc4 Bf6 6.Qxa6 Re6 7.a4 10. +- (4.57): 1.Qe6 a5 2.a3 a4 3.Qe4 Kg8 4.Qxa4 Re1 5.Qc4+ Kh7 6.b4 Be7 7.Qd4 Re6 11. +- (4.50): 1.Qe5 Rc4 2.Qb8+ Kf7 3.Qb7+ Kg6 4.Qxa6 Rd4 5.Qe2 Kh7 6.f4 g6 7.Kf3 Rd8 8.Qc2 12. +- (4.46): 1.Qd7 a5 2.Qf5+ Kg8 3.Qe6+ Kh7 4.a3 a4 5.Qe4+ Kh8 6.Qxa4 Re1 7.Qg4 13. +- (4.46): 1.Qd3 a5 2.Qf5+ Kg8 3.Qe6+ Kh7 4.a3 a4 5.Qe4+ Kh8 6.Qxa4 Re1 7.Qg4 14. +- (4.46): 1.Qh5 a5 2.Qf5+ Kg8 3.Qe6+ Kh7 4.a3 a4 5.Qe4+ Kh8 6.Qxa4 Re1 7.Qg4 15. +- (4.36): 1.h4 a5 2.Qd2 Ra1 3.Qc3 Bb4 4.Qc8+ Kf7 5.Qc7+ Be7 6.h5 a4 7.Qc4+ Kf6 8.Qxa4 16. +- (4.22): 1.h3 a5 2.Qd2 Ra1 17. +- (3.86): 1.g4 a5 2.h4 Re1 3.h5 Ke7 4.Qd3 Kf8 5.Qf3+ 18. +- (3.86): 1.a4 a5 2.h4 Re1 3.h5 Ke7 4.f4 Re3 5.Qb7+ Kf6 6.Qb8 Kf7 19. +- (3.80): 1.Qc6 a5 2.Qa8+ Kf7 3.Qd5+ Kf8 4.h4 Re1 5.h5 Re7 6.a4 20. +- (3.74): 1.Qb3 a5 2.Qf3+ Kg8 3.h4 Rc2 At a depth of 19/52 ply, Shredder 9.1 reports Qf5 is still very good: 5k2/6p1/pp5p/2bQ4/8/6P1/PP3PKP/2r5 w - - 0 1 Analysis by Shredder 9.1 UCI UCI: 1. +- (8.16): 1.Qd8+ Kf7 2.Qc7+ Kg8 3.b4 Kh7 4.bxc5 bxc5 5.Qf4 Ra1 6.Qe4+ Kh8 7.Qa8+ Kh7 8.Qxa6 2. +- (6.94): 1.Qf5+ Ke7 2.Qe5+ Kd8 3.Qxg7 Rd1 4.Qxh6 Rd6 5.Qf8+ Kd7 6.h4 Rd2 7.Qf7+ Kd8 8.h5 Rxf2+ Now that the best move is established and I just happened to have my Novag Obsidian out running the BT2450 test suite on it (since no seems to have done this), I'll mention that the Obsidian finds Qd8 in 15 seconds after a full search of 5 ply (level was Fixed Depth 5). By the way, the wood pieces that come with the Obsidian, while small, are much nicer than any plastic pieces I've ever used. Woodwishing Regards, Chuck
