The perpetual was certainly not forced.
It's all water under the bridge by now.
Pachman suggested 8...d4 with compensation for Black long ago.
8...Nc6 instead of 8...Na6? was also suggested.
8.d4 instead of 8.Kb3 was suggested as improvement for white.
