All information needed is already included inside the compatible X-FEN string.

So for what should FRC be announced, if the engine already had signalled
its FRC awareness to the GUI? An FRC enable engine always could play FRC,
there is NO NEED to SWITCH its mode, like the Shredder GUI does, making
the handling of Chess960 unnecessaryly amd incompatibly complicated.

This depends also on the protocol. As far as I know UCI is demanding to
send regular castling moves by source and target square coordinates.
Here the Shredder FEN extension for Chess960 is contradicting itself.
E.g. Pseudeo-FRC derived positions have to be handled differently
depending on Shredders perspective, ignoring that those perspectives
do not change the position at all.

Arena has been opened early for FRC still waiting for a compatible
official Chess960 extension of the UCI protocol, which was not there.
So its behaviour is partially provisional. Now, where an incompatible
Shredder FEN extension has been published, waiting longer will make
no sense at all.

A way to solve this would be to handle it like SMIRF does it in its
used own TMCI protocol. Here COMPATIBLY castlings are sent as follows:
a) if the King does more than one single step, King's source and King's
destination square coordinates; b) otherwise King's source and involved
Rook's source destination square coordinates. By that also a unique
gesture has been defined, to signal that move manually to the GUI.
This overmore works IDENTICALLY in Chess960 AND traditional Chess.

Reinhard.
