Fruit 2.2.1 (14 day trial version) crashed in my Shredder Classic 9.1 GUI while
I was running an infinite analysis.
I had this happen once before during an engine-engine match. I assumed it was an
accident and forgot about it, but now it has happened again. So this is not an
isolated freak accident. There is a bug somewhere! This time I have saved the
evidence and details as follows...
I was analyzing the following position in a game in infinite mode:
[D]r2qkbr1/pp3p1p/2n1bp2/2p1p3/Q4B2/2NP1N2/PP3PPP/R3R1K1 b q -
It started and proceeded OK, and had produced the following lines of analysis:

At this point it was taking forever (nearly 200 minutes) while still calculating
at the 18th ply [18/26, 12...Bg4 (24/45)]. In other words it was calculating the
24th move in its list of 45 possible candidate moves at 18 ply, and refused to
complete the calculation. Everything appeared OK except that it was not
continuing the analysis. The clock was still running OK. I decided that it was
taking too long, perhaps hung, so I pressed "Insert" as usual to terminate the
analysis and force it to make the move in the game. It refused to make the move
and the GUI would not function properly. Instead, it produced the following
sequence in the engine window:
Waiting for engine Fruit 2.2.1[1]...
Waiting for engine Fruit 2.2.1[1]...
Waiting for engine Fruit 2.2.1[1]...
Waiting for engine Fruit 2.2.1[1]...
Waiting for engine Fruit 2.2.1[1]...
Waiting for engine Fruit 2.2.1[1]...
### this is not an uci engine!!! ###
Then the usual little popup dialog box appeared, asking me to click OK, because
this is a 14 day trial version of Fruit 2.2.1.
I did so, but the GUI was frozen. None of the operation keys would work. Looking
in the menu I noticed that the mode had automatically switched to "Play against
Computer", although it was running in "Analysis" mode originally. Nothing would
work, so it was necessary to reset (close and restart) the GUI.
Of course I don't know if this problem is the fault of the Fruit 2.2.1 trial
version engine or the GUI. I've never had a complete freeze-up of the Shredder
Classic GUI before, only rare glitches probably caused by multitasking, nothing
serious like this. Also note that I have successfully used this engine in this
GUI in infinite analysis of many positions/games during the last few days, so
this sort of crash doesn't happen very often.
