Hi, you can learn chess without memorization and have a lot of fun, that's one way of doing it. However, you will most likely be a patzer all your life :-) The other way is to memorize patterns that appear in games, especially those key games by great players. To get an idea, try reading a tiny, but mind-opening, book by Reti titled "Modern Ideas in Chess". Larry Christiansen was absolutely right when he said that LOTS of memorization is needed for understanding chess and the way it functions in actual play. There are no shortcuts and you can't cut any corners though. Have fun :-) Djordje
