In the origin of the SSDF list, they did exactly that: Play games against rated players. But as you can imagine, it would cost a lot of money to do it today. Also, in the past, the GMs knew that they could easily knock the stuffings out of the hardware/software chess machines and so they would have little reluctance to have their name forever associated with such an event. So I think it will be harder and more costly today to do it. In short, I think it would take a benefactor with deep pockets. In almost every case, when someone is going to spend millions of dollars, they expect to get some money back. So I think that the only company even in a position to do it is Mindscape and since they do not have the strongest chess program they would be in no mood to spend the money. The program with the most to gain is Fruit, but it is also the program with the smallest advertizing budget according to my guess. If multiple CPUs are used, Zappa might be a program that would benefit greatly. Unfortunately, Anthony Cozzie seems to have been bummed out by something. Or maybe he just got too busy with school. In any case, I would be pleasantly surprised if such an event were to occur.
