Subject: Fruit 221, Fritz 9 and Deep Shredder 9.1 (Stand, after 72 of 150 games)

Author: Tomas Casanovas Martinez

Date: 13:08:54 11/08/05

Tourney:

Fritz 9 - own book
Fruit 2.2.1 - own book
Deep Shredder 9.1 UCI - Shredder 8 book

No tablebases.

Junior 9 GUI

40/40 + 40/40 + 40

Pentium IV, 3,00 Mhz. 2 CPUS.

Standings after 72 out of 150 games:

                        1 2 3
Fruit 2.2.1 ....... 12,5-11,5 14,0-10,0 26,5/48
Deep Shredder 9.1 11,5-12,5 ....... 11,5-11,5 23,0/48
Fritz 9 10,0-14,0 12,5-11,5 ....... 22,5/48

Some comments and feelings:

- Fruit 2.2.1 has lost more than half of the advantage it had after 39 games.
The match is getting more and more interesting.

In my previous post:

" Standings after 39 out of 150 games:

                        1 2 3
Fruit 2.2.1 ......... 9,5-3,5 9,0-4,0 18,5/26
Fritz 9 3,5-9,5 ....... 7,5-5,5 11,0/26
Deep Shredder 9,1 4,0-9,0 5,5-7,5 ....... 9,5/26

I do no expect that Fruit can increase or even maintain this enormous
performance (71%) in the overall tourney. My guess now is that the tourney (150
games) will end around:

Fruit 2.2.1 65/100
Fritz 9 45/100
Deep Shredder 9.1 40/100 "

You will see that my forecast seems to be completely wrong. Although my feeling
is that Fruit will be able to keep its current advantage in the second half of
the tournament.

Some answers to the questions posted:

To Jim Walker:

- One machine with 2 CPUS. Ponder Off.

To William Penn:

- In my opinion the Shredder engines are good endgame players. Until now, the
best ones. But Fruit 2.2.1 seems to be even stronger in this part of the game.

To Vladislav Kosulyn:

- You are right in terms of the book used by Deep Shredder 9.1: It uses the book
of Shredder 8, not Shredder 9. Apologies for the mistake!.

- My experience is that Deep Shredder 9.1 UCI in Junior 9 GUI is not that slow.
Some examples:

It is about 35% faster than Shredder 9.1 in the same computer. And:

Its speed is roughly equal in both GUIs (Junior 9 and own GUI). Around 450.000
moves/second between moves 15 to 20 and around 750.000 moves/second in the
endgame. I don't know if my computer is well tuned to optimize its speed.
Probably it is not.

To Gerold Daniels:

- I am not using tb for this tournament.
- After 72 games, your forecast seems to be much more accurate than mine, with
Deep Shredder 9.1 and Fritz 9 roughly equal and Fruit 2.2.1 around 14% better
(you said 10%). ;-D

Thanks to all of you, and also to Kurt, for your encouraging comments. I will
keep you informed.

Bets regards,

Tom.
