Hi Steve

i can reccommend any of the computers here:

for the begginning player these computers all have begginners levels,FUN
levels(where the computer will make occassional blunders on purpose) and the top
levels are not stronger then an average expieriences player
any one of them can easily fit in your sons back pack and none of them are very
expensive

as to the number of buttons..well some of these have no buttons at all and
operate by a touch Pen system and a few even look like a Game boy
