the seller has replied and also included the question and answer in the eBAY
listing

  A: The short answer is I don't know. I believe it requires a different power
supply (marked on the machine) from the production models and so hasn't been
tested since 1981. Also the program is on EPROM, not ROM, and EPROMS were mainly
intended for use in prototyping, not for production models, so may not have
lasted. However, having said all that, it was very well made, so it could well
still work.

the Eprom was the most widely used way store and read  a chess program for the
old computers and of course were used in all production models as well as
prototypes, so i am not sure what the seller means by all of that

but it comes down to this..
Protoype has not been tested since 1981
seller does not have the adaptor to attempt a test
