Subject: Chessmaster - abandonware versions?

 Last night I've searched for some freeware chess programs. There were some
references to abandonware versions of Chessmaster.
 Versions 2000 - 3000 are freely downloadable from some sites (they are
allegedly abandonware), also there is Chessmaster 4000 for MAC and even for
Windows. But there are long debates about CM4000 not working on WindowsXP.
 On the Chessmaster site there is nothing about this, only versions
8000, 9000 and 10th are mentioned.
 Is it true that the old versions are abandonware and freely distributable?
 Which versions exactly?
 Can CM4000 run on WindowsXP?
