It is difficult to decide which "engine" is better.
As you mentioned the book is an important part.
And there are learning issues. The program with better learning functions, book
learning, position learning, may win a match even if the "engine" is weaker.
For people interested in analysis pure "engine" strengh is relevant.
Usual computer matches give only same hints in this direction.
