Go up one level in this thread
Hi George, I answered by email before seeing this thread, so I'll just copy my mail here. First of all, not all programs report tablebase usage by printing "TB=...". The only way to know is to set up a tablebase position and see the engine analysis. Both List 5.12 and Zappa 1.1 do not report "TB=...", while they still can using tablebases perfectly well. Another thing. There are engines that use tablebases only when tablebase position occurs on board, and there are engines that can also use tablebases in search. You are probably interested in those using them during search, because it is a bit late to check tablebases when the game already reached 4-men position. So to check the tablebase usage you should test not with tablebase position, but with some position which occurs just before converting to tablebase. For example I just composed a position to test 4-men bases: 8/5k2/2PK4/2Q2Q2/8/5q2/5r2/8 b - - 0 1 This is mate in 44 moves, so it's long enough that engines without EGTB support will not see it. Each engine with EGTB support will immediately show #44, or #45 (sometimes #43) for this position. You can test your engines with this position and see which ones support tablebases and what do not. I just tested a few engines (I disabled 5 and 6-men bases first), and confirmed that List 5.12 and Zappa 1.1 can use the 4-men bases fine. I hope it helps.
