I believe (from memory), some computer chess tournaments won't allow operators to offer draws or accept draw offers on behalf of the engine. However, this seems not the case for the Leiden tournament. From http://www.computerschaak.nl/rulesuk.html: ad art. 5: The end of a game The operator has the right to resign a game, offer a draw or accept an offered draw on behalf of the computer. If a game is stopped in this way, the arbiter can still decide that the game must be resumed. Claims for a draw based on art. 9.2 (repetition) or 9.3 (50-moves) must be made by the computer itself. Some strange things happen in computer chess: in dead draw position, one engine might think, it has an advantage (which it really might have, but not enough to win). This engine might give away its advantange in small step - until the position is lost. IMHO, it is part of the game. In the Paderborn tournament 3 (?) years ago, Yace could win against Shredder because of this (Shredder tried hard, to avoid draw by repetition). I think, especially in computer chess, it won't hurt, to do play until the end. Regards, Dieter
