I agree.  I feel it is safe to assume that chess engines are not studying
openings in their free time so they will know how to play out of the latest
popular openings.  Even with book and position learning the engine will only
know what did not work in the past.  It would be far more productive to study
the strengths and weaknesses of an engine and hand tune a book to play to the
strengths.  The big issue with this is time.
