On the basis of 50 or 100 games at 1 minute plus 1 second would you think that Shredder or Fritz or Fruit should start making changes to compete? At that time control is it really playing strength that is being tested? Finally, it needs a large number of games against an array of different opponents to come to any guesses as to strength. Later. Ps. The free versus commercial argument is a good one but I am surprised that you state it as though it was new. For 99% of the members of this Forum, Crafty is way too strong already. Commercial products do not thrive purely on engine strength. In that event, Chessmaster would never be the outrageous best seller thatit is. The free stuff is awesome. I believe the commercials have already discovered that. Ps. 2 Please do not misunderstand. You can test at whatever timecontrol you desire. Just be selective about the conclusions you derive from the results.
