Gerald,

For me there is one great reason to buy Fritz 9 - the chess engine! Franz
Morsch has clearly improved many aspects of play and there is definitely a
significant (> 50 ELO) strength increase compared to Fritz 8. The aspect that I
hadn't expected was the new playing style - it's incredibly aggressive. It
reminds me of M-Chess. Take a look at:

http://216.239.39.104/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://kd.lab.nig.ac.jp/chess/cegt/rating-table-shifted.shtml

You'll notice that Fritz 9's draw percentage is the lowest on the list -
probably another indication of it's aggressive tendencies.

As for the GUI, there seems to be some useful changes but nothing startling.
The video tutorial are interesting; clearly a (clever) sampling ploy on the part
of Chessbase.

Here's a fun game that I played - the victim is Crafty. I orchestrated Fritz to
play the Halloween Attack, giving up a knight in exchange for a pawn and heap of
space. Fritz 9 completely outplays Crafty. Also, look at the difference in the
evaluations, Crafty clearly does not appreciate the dire position it is, while
at the same time Fritz accurately crushes it!

For me Fritz 9 is one of my favorite engines - a must buy for all chess fans.
