Opening books are very shallow really.. Look at the games from the engine/engine matches. In one or two moves they are out of book. Some go for the 5 move .ctg Why? Engines don't have intelligence, knowledge or style, they store and retrieve information. They 'evaluate', that's all they do. That's why they really cannot compete with humans. A Human..Top Grandmaster can see at a glance what may take the Program 30 Ply to find, and under Tournament time controls cannot find. It's far below their horizon. A Top Grandmaster in the endgame for example can calculate a Mate in 20. That means 40 Ply for a Computer. The Time allocation software makes the computer move too fast to find the best moves. Yeah.. it's really as simple as that.
