Third game of four in the match. In this game, the Star Diamond takes over the board with a pawn wave and then breaks through on f2. Makes the Star Diamond look impressive, though neither side played perfectly. This is 3 wins in a row for the SD. PGN is at the bottom of this post. 1.c4 f5 2.d4 Nf6 3.g3 e6 4.Bg2 Be7 5.Nf3 d6 6.0-0 0-0 The Dutch, Classical Variation, ECO A96. My statistics show White has scored well from here. But this is the last good position you'll see for White today. :) [D]rnbq1rk1/ppp1b1pp/3ppn2/5p2/2PP4/5NP1/PP2PPBP/RNBQ1RK1 w - - 0 7 7.Nc3 a5 8.Bf4 Nbd7 9.b3 Ne4 10.Nxe4 fxe4 11.Nd2 d5 12.e3 g5 13.Be5 Nxe5 14.dxe5 Bb4 15.Nb1 c6 16.Qd4?! b6 17.Rd1 Qc7 18.a3 Bc5 Like so many amateur games you've probably seen, the Lyon has fallen victim to little pawn pushes and is losing control of the board. Steamrolled. After Black clears the lost weakling on e5, you'll see that Black has gained a good grip on the center. [D]r1b2rk1/2q4p/1pp1p3/p1bpP1p1/2P1p3/PPQ1P1P1/5PBP/RN1R2K1 b - - 0 19 19.Qc3 Rf5 20.Ra2 Rxe5 Black should direct the game from here. Not only does he control the middle squares but he has a nice little target on f2. [D]r1b3k1/2q4p/1pp1p3/p1bpr1p1/2P1p3/PPQ1P1P1/R4PBP/1N1R2K1 w - - 0 21 21.Rad2 Rf5 22.Bh3 Rf8 23.Bg2 Qg7 24.Rc1 Qxc3 25.Rxc3 Ba6 26.Bh3 Rf6 27.Rc1 Raf8 Just a few moves later and now Black is imposing. All of his pieces are aimed at the White King. [D]5rk1/7p/bpp1pr2/p1bp2p1/2P1p3/PP2P1PB/3R1P1P/1NR3K1 w - - 0 28 28.Bg4 Kh8 29.Kg2 e5 30.Kg1 dxc4 31.bxc4 Rxf2? And the Star Diamond stumbles! Opponent on the ropes; it must have been the sweat in his eyes. Clearly no steroids for the SD. Rh6 or Kg7 seems to keep the advantage. [D]5r1k/7p/bpp2r2/p1b1p1p1/2P1p1B1/P3P1P1/3R1P1P/1NR3K1 b - - 0 31 32.Rxf2 Bxe3 33.Rcc2 Bxc4 But the Lyon isn't seeing too well, either, and pulls off the f2 square he needed to protect. From here the Star Diamond presses on as the Lyon fades out. [D]5r1k/7p/1pp5/p3p1p1/2b1p1B1/P3b1P1/2R2R1P/1N4K1 w - - 0 34 34.Rxc4? After 3 games the Star Diamond has a surprising 3-0 lead; they are only 25 points apart on the latest SSDF rating list.
