Just guessing here, but maybe is it 1024 Megs, and some hash tables that do not use prime haskeys increment in powers of 2. That would mean the next biggest hash size would be 2 GB, which would leave no RAM for the operating system (and the program itself) under certain Windows flavors with a 2 GB ceiling.
