I have downloaded a number of freeware programs from gambitsoft. Arasan 5.0 seems to be one of the stronger ones. I have played so far 6 games between Arasan 5.0 on a 333mhz computer and my Berlin Pro 68020, a dedicated chess computer with a rating I would estimate approaches 2400 USCF. So far Arasan leads 2-1, with 3 draws(60 moves in 30min). Even stronger freeware seems to be Comet A96, which beat Berlin by 6-0, with 4 draws and Siberian Chess 2.15, which beat Berlin by 5-1, with 4 draws. Most of the freeware programs I download lose badly to Berlin.
