Komputer Korner gives thumbs up for this type of tutorial. The chess engine is based on W-Chess which is strong enough for someone learning to play chess. Also the program has been designed to lose 25% of the games one play against so that one does not get discouraged from being beaten by the computer over and over and over again without having to play with the settings. As for books, well there are a lot of chess books out there, and going to the local library is a good start, I would stay away from books written by Fred Reinfeld, except the Tactical quizzes books, and Horowitz books.
