It was with some hesitation that I accepted Komputer Korner's invitation to play a slow match against one of the latest silicon monsters, Hiarcs6. In the end, his enthusiasm and ability to attract some publicity with local newspaper and television outweighed my natural aversion to playing against computers. Anything that promotes chess can't be all bad! I will leave the technical details of the match to KK. Here's how the human saw it. From the first game, I noticed there were going to be a few problems. In contrast, my opponent showed remarkable composure. In fact, I don't recall it making a single complaint! The match site was Pinecrest Mall, a medium-sized shopping centre in Ottawa's West End. Unfortunately, we were all on display in the middle of a busy concourse and the ambient noise level was quite high. There was also the problem of people coming up to me to ask if they could play, or whose' move it was, or how much the computer cost, etc. In game one, mall security was actually called to the scene to escort a rather harmless, but boisterous daytime tippler from the premises! If there is ever a rematch (and I wouldn't mind a shot at redemption) I will have to insist on a quieter, sheltered location. Even behind a storefront window in the mall would have been a significant improvement. As the match progressed, I took refuge behind various sets of earplugs and headphones, and I must have made quite the sight sporting a suit jacket and industrial strength headwear. [Game analysis snipped ...] The third game provided still another shock. I was prepared to repeat the French from game one, as I expected Hiarcs6 would really have no reason to vary. After all, it won the first game, so unless it felt it was worse at some stage, I should have theoretically had a chance to play the same game and improve at some stage, if I could discover something. The day before the game was played KK informed me that the computer with would be playing the rest of the match on 'Aggressive Mode.' I didn't really know what to make of that, but saw no reason to alter my preparation. When I sat down and saw 1. c4, I was really puzzled. It thinks the English Opening is aggressive, and that 1 .e4 is not!
