Subject: What Good are Fruit 2.2.1 and Toga II 1.1?

For those of you who have older machines like Pentium II models running at 300
to 400 MHz, Fruit 2.2.1 and Toga II 1.1 provide fairly decent chess for very
little money. I would say that these programs on a clunky old sub-Gigahertz
desktop are probably much better than programs on 600 MHz PDAs.

You can get secondhand PCs for less than $100.00 USD including a 17 inch
monitor.
Slap in a program like Fruit 2.2.1 or Toga II 1.1 and you have a bargain
basement
great game machine. Of course, it is best to have a nice GUI like Shredder 9 or
Fritz 9 on such a system. The added chess database function is quite handy. You
can get used Shredder 8.0 CDs for almost no money.

If you really want a challenge then you can download Cake Checkers by Martin
Fierz of Switzerland. This is another free program that plays at a master level.

Cake ver 1.05 plays very strong checkers on an old machine like PIIs and AMDK7
450 MHz.

Enjoy your Cake and Fruit,

Uncle Timbo
