Fritz, CM, Gandalf, Junior, Shredder...
All are arguably about the same strength as well (within 100 Elo or so).
So why buy any of them?

Probably because:
1. You like the features offered and which are absent in other programs
2. You want tablebase access to see perfect analysis in endgame
3. You want to support the authors (I bought several engines for this reason
alone)
4. You are interested in having several (different) strong opinions about what
the best move is.

My opinion:
I guess that within a year, Fruit will gain another 100 Elo points. If Fabien
continues to receive support, we will see miraculous moves made that are truly
works of art. If that is worth lunch money to you, then buy it.

People who are not willing to spend pocket change for a chess engine or debate
about it for hours are probably not going to buy one in any case.
