I believe that the current sutuation is quite ideal :
Suddenly , you have a panel of very strong engines , some free , others
commercial , and of which strength may be usefully compared : Rybka ,Gambit
Fruit , TogaII , Fruit , Shredder , Frutz , Junior , Hiarcs and I forget some :
it recalls , for human chess , this era , just before the war , when , e-g in
the AVRO tournament , you could oppose champions of the past as Capablanca or
Alekhine to champions of the future as Botvinnik or Keres
But it's not sufficient to collect raw results , as it learns nothing to us
about strength and weaknesses of each engine : it's necessary not to be content
with making them play on a battery of computers , but LOOK at them while the
play , what is the effect of the choice of oenig books , and WHY some engine
"likes" an opening and dislikes another
In these columns , I could read Topics about a good ( or a bad ) move of an
engine , but very seldom about the comparison of their styles , because we had
not enough strong engines of quite different styles
Now we can , so let's work in this way , for the good of Chess and Computers!
