Crafty+Winboard+CDB will run under Windows 95 and do exactly what you want. Commercial programs also do the same thing (and probably in a way better for a computer chess beginner to understand). I recommend also a commercial chess database to explore the lines you are playing and compare them with the lines that experts play.
