My floppy drive, 2 hard drives, and CD-ROM drive are stacked on top of each
other. They are very close together, practically touching, so can't get air
circulation between them. I monitor the temperatures and my hard drives run hot
already. One of them, the one in the middle, is near the temperature limit! I
put in an extra fan to try to cool them but it doesn't do much good.

As for swapping the CD-ROM for a DVD-ROM drive... I don't know what would happen
if I need to reinstall my OEM Windows op system in this Compaq computer from the
recovery CDs. The recovery CDs were burnt on my current CD-ROM drive. They are
very sensitive to changes in configuration and might not work right if the
CD-ROM drive or other internal components are changed. That would be a major
headache, so I won't take the risk.

So I won't have a DVD-ROM available until I buy a new computer someday, maybe
2-3 years in the future.
