Occasionally I play standard games on FICs, and have come across computer
cheaters. I become suspicious if a player plays consistently strong moves which
I don't understand (i.e. not typical human moves in the position). I then
analyze the game using one or several engines, to determine if there is a strong
correlation between the engine's top moves and the move played, given a similar
time to analyze. After this, I am either sure or don't have enough data. An
additional clincher is when the opponent's standard rating is much much higher
than their blitz rating (where they don't have time to consult an engine).

Of course if a player only consults the engine, but does not blindly use its
first choice of move, and throws in a couple of his own ideas, it is next to
impossible to prove.

regards
