I mean the first design is obviously based on a clear plan (intelligent design)....but then the modifications might be on top of that original design, perhaps as you discover the engine, for example, plays poorly in the endgame or tends to move pawns in front of its king too often (in the evolutionary metaphor, these would be adaptations). It just seemed to me that there would be some limitations in how much you could take an original program.. programs like crafty and rebel just ran out of steam, though they started out in front of everybody. I wonder if the author of rybka or fruit could take crafty and modify it so that it would be the top engine? Or, from a modern programing perspective, is crafty just too flawed to modify into the top program
