My four horsemen:
1.  GnuChess.  This was my first look at a functioning chess engine's source
code.
2.  Crafty.  A strong chess engine with dozens of amazing state of the art
tricks inside of it.
3.  Arasan.  A full featured engine with a nice GUI.
4.  Deep Blue.  We still talk about the matches nearly a decade afterwards.

Sure, the others are amazing.  Maybe Rybka could teach Deep Blue a trick or two.
 But after the initial stampede, new galloping stallions are just some more
horses, raising the dust cloud higher.
