To quote myself "variety of engines to play against isn't so great" I would say
that has to be 100% correct since none of the Chessbase native engines can play
easily against Chess Tiger 2004.

And how easy would it be to match Chess Tiger 2004 v say Fritz 9.

Lets see. One PC for Chess Tiger 2004 in CP GUI and another two to get the
Chessbase program to connect to ICC. Let's try another Playchess ok Fritz 9 no
problem v Tiger 2004 problem, see it isn't quite so easy as you seem to think it
is.

I never saw a single Rybka crash on time. The time control is 4/40 repeating.

Sarah.
