From What I see even Top Programs doesnt play well without the book. Very much so. Just like a human tournament player, who suddenly couldn't remember or refused to play, the openings he/she knew to be sound. It took a very long time for humans to find and then develop the openings that work today, and that is still changing, of course. The effects of the opening reach beyond the search horizon, even of today's powerful PC's and programs. In the endgame, some programs have gotten lazy, just relying on the tablebases, but they can play a good endgame, even without them. Good is certainly not the same as perfect for every ending, however. Dave
