As far as _FREE_ AV software Avast is imho one of the best. It has the added ability to schedule a run at startup before the desktop loads which helps with removing sticky viruses. AVG is improving but imho has a way to go. By far the most overpriced, overrated and _ineffective_ AV program is Norton. We get so many faulty PCs with NAV installed and 30+ viruses all resident with NAV oblivious. And yet NAV is supposed to have one of the best detection rates. It also slows down a PC to an incredible degree. I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. If you're willing to pay some money... we have found NOD32 to be very effective at detecting potential viruses - with the added benefit of having an extremely light footprint... ie it doesn't hog the memory and CPU.... which is perfect when you're running chess engines. :-) Finally, we're back on topic. :-) Kaspersky AV provides good protection also, but is very heavy weight and sometimes over-aggressive to the point of stopping MS-Office VBA based software from running correctly. And finally, its not only about Virus protection. Spyware and adware can cause just as much havoc as a virus... except they don't procreate/proliferate. So you need protection against those too. I recommend having several Anti-Spyware progs on your PC... including Spyware Doctor, Spybot S&D and Adaware. The last two are freebies. I also use Ewido, CounterSpy and TrendMicro's Anti-Spyware. May your PC run long and free, Ross (and TRACE)
