Although this announcement is not directly computer chess, it might be interesting for chess programmers who read the message board. Thanks for your tolerance, Ingo Althofer. ************** Announcement ********************** 3-Hirn-Grant on ‘‘Inventing Games with Computer Help‘‘ The 3-Hirn-Grant is intended to support a doctoral project (approximately equivalent to a Ph.D. project) in the research group of Prof.Dr. Ingo Althofer, at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at ‘‘Friedrich Schiller University“ in Jena, Germany. The topic in focus is the design of algorithms and the development of corresponding software to automatically evaluate games from ‘‘appropriate“ game classes and to tune them. The longterm goal is the creation of software for ‘‘computer-aided“ game inventing. Start of the Grant: October 1st, 2006, or later. Amount of Financial Support: 750 Euro monthly, for at least two years. The candidate is expected to do the doctoral project in Jena. In case of an exceptionally qualified applicant external working/supervision is possible. Prerequisites: A diploma or Master’s degree with distinction in Mathematics, Computer Science, Theoretical Physics, Econo-Mathematics, Economics, or in another appropriate discipline. Besides the normally expected properties (creativity, diligence, enthusiasm for the subject) applicants should also have programming experience (in C or C++ or quick Java or ...). Previous Work on computer-aided game inventing, done by our Group:  Several semester projects and diploma theses  Software by Thomas Rolle (‘‘Morphling“), see for instance the download at the end of http://www.wurzel.org/zeitschrift/artikel.php?artikel=2004-064c  Software by Dr. Jorg Sameith (‘‘MacRandom“ for a class of games with intensive dice rolling)  Preprint http://www.minet.uni-jena.de/preprints/althoefer_03/CAGI.pdf Highly recommended is also to have a look at the commercial multi-game playing program ‘‘Zillions of Game“, by Mark Lefler and Jeff Mallett, http://www.zillions-of-games.com Appropriate game classes for the doctoral project might be:  Connection Games (see the book ‘‘Connection Games“ by Cameron Browne)  Classes of card games  Classes of games with incomplete information  Classes of games for many players  Discrete eco-simulations (for instance games like the ‘‘Settler of Catan“) Own proposals by applicants are welcome! Applications, please, until July 31, 2006, to: althofer@minet.uni-jena.de Applications should include: current CV; diploma/master testimony or declarations about partly completed studies, topic of diploma/master‘s thesis and abstract; research interests, relations to the board game scene, experiences in game programming; hobbies. Within a few days of receiving an application, the applicant will receive electronic feedback describing the further procedure. The selection for the grant will be made by a committee including Prof. Dr. Ingo Althofer (FSU Jena), Prof. Dr. Clemens Beckstein (FSU Jena), Dr. Christian Donninger (Vienna, A), Dr. Ulf Lorenz (U Paderborn), Dr. Karl Scherer (Auckland, NZ), Dr. Reinhold Wittig (Goettingen).
