I don't know what was in Thomas' mind when he decided on Toga for a name, but I'm mindful that while it is legal to make modified copies of GPL programs and call them what you will, it is often NOT legal to include the original's name in the new name. The names of the high profile projects are often trademarked, e.g. Linux, and it would be illegal for you to call your version KempenLinux. Even if not illegal it may unwelcome, since if the changes you make are deleterious it would reflect badly on the original. For these reasons it is not usual, though not unheard of, for programs derived from GPL project to bear a close resemblance in names. Certainly before naming a new version of Fruit "Greg Fruit" I would ask permission, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was refused. Now Vegetable, or Steak, or Tibof (for Tibof Is Based On Fruit) would be in the GNU tradition and give some indirect acknowledgment to Fruit, but such cleverness(?) isn't appreciated by everybody. I know this wasn't your main point but sometimes I just have to pick at those nits, whatever my better judgment says.
