anothony (zappa) suggested that although rybka is suppose to be a positional
giant, it seems to also be very tactical. Some tests i've been running seem to
support this assertion. I have constructed a test set consisting of 22 gambit
openings (none give strong advantage to either side). These openings tend to
be tactical, although their is an occasional positional gambit (e.g., benko and
french wing gambit). computers play both sides of the gambit......
Rybka seems to be very strong
All games are 25 minutes with 1 sec increment. All games involving gambit fruit
1 beta 4bx were played on 2 ghz pentium. the other games were played on on a
slower P3 pentium (and this tournment is still going).
Here is are the records of rybka versus:
Win loss draw
gambit fruit 20 11 13
fruit 2.2.1 8 2 5
fritz 9 6 7 2
toga II.1 7 2 5
spike 1.0a mainz 11 0 3 (wow!!!)
rufian 2.1 9 1 4
The tournment continues, but at this point Rybka has no trouble with gambits..I
am a bit surprised given that it was suppose to be such a positional program....
but then positional chess if often just setting the table for tactics.
In contrast, fritz 9 is struggling a bit more, though it is very early days and
i've only tested partially on gambit fruit.
Fritz 9 verus gambit fruit 1 4bx
Wins losses draws
5 6 6
I'll keep updating if anybody is interested
best
