the championship where amsterdam appeared was 1985. the amsterdam had a 16 bit CPU . other programs still had to run on 8 bit. while e.g. the most programs run on 4mhz 8 Bit cpus with 8 KByte RAM and only 32 KByte ROM (for I/O, opening etc.) you could adress as much rom and ram on the 16 bit motorola 68000 as you wished. this should be considered. of course the idea of an asymmetric search of richard was a milestone, until nullmove was developed.
