Eduard,

Thanks for the post, but I must disagree with one thing ... Vladimir Kramnik is
NOT the World Champion, since he refused to play. (Also, his results have not
been too good in the last year, and his rating is now around 7th or 8th, if I
remember correctly). You can't keep your title if you refuse to play! If that
were true, then Bobby Fischer would still be champ (he still is in his own
mind).

Kramnik was invited to the WC tournament but did not play. He had the chance,
he declined ... his decision. Veselin Topalov played brilliantly, as he has
during the whole year and richly deserved his victory. Also, he administered
Kasparov both a tournament and a personal defeat in GK's last tourney. Thus the
torch is passed. I think if Kramnik wants to be champ, he should get the gloves
on and climb in the "ring" with the others. THEN we can see how strong he is
now. That's the problem ... he is NOT as strong as when he beat Kasparov.
Watch, I think he will again have about an even or +1 showing this this
tournament now. Respectable, but not a big deal and certainly not WC standard.

He's not the Kramnik he used to be (don't know why...), and THAT is the real
reason he's not playing, I think. He doesn't want to get beat ... he would
rather say, "I am still the champ," and nobody can disprove it since he refuses
to PROVE it by playing. It's been 5 years since he beat GK, and he only
defended his title (NOT against Kasparov, Anand, or Topalov) and drew the match
(barely), but did not win. So, he drew ONE match in the last 5 years, refuses
to play in the WC cycle and claims he is still the best, despite being ranked
about 7th or 8th?
