Subject: A zugzwang position

Author: GuyHaworth

This is the btm side of the 7-man pawnless full-point zugzwang, the first such
known, and cited by Noam Elkies in the quarterly 'EG' in the late '90s. (There
are no 2- to 6-man P-less fpzs.)

[D] 8/8/8/8/2n5/1n6/R1N5/1B1K1k2 b - - 0 1

Any offers from chess engines on:
  - a line to mate, Depth to Conversion or Depth to Mate?

I assume DTM > 9 as the rather unrated 1...Ne5 leads to 2.Ne3+ Kg1
3.Rg2+ Kh1 4.Be4 Nc5 5.Bd5 Ne4 6.Bxe4 Nf3 7.Rg3 Kh2 8.Nf1+ Kh1 9.Bxf3#

I'm currently looking via engine at:
1...Kg1 2.Ne1 Ne3+ 3.Ke2 Nc1+ {'casting the die' rather than deferring
conversion: DTM = 14} 4.Kxe3 Nxa2 5.Bxa2 Kf1 6.Nc2 Kg2 ...

Without the wB on b1, Black needs five unique moves to hang on to the draw:
[D] 8/8/8/8/2n5/1n6/R1N5/3K1k2 b - - 0 1

1...Nc5! 2.Nd4 Ne3+! 3.Kd2 Kf2! 4.Kc3+ Kg3! 5.Ra3 Kf4!

This is likely to be the 6-man P-less full-point mzug where the drawing side
finds it 'hardest' to reach the draw.

Seasonal greetings - g
