Over at chess.net, where 90% of the people use the chess.net for windows interface, there are a couple systems set up to deter computer cheats. I'm always watching for computers.. sometimes I catch 3 in a week. One of the things I noticed about ICC and Fics was the slowness of reaction time when a player was accused of cheating.. Sometimes it would go on for months with no action from the admins, in a case of blatent computer abuse. First of all, we have a team of 4 admins called C*A*S*T (computer abuse swat team). I founded this group a couple years ago in an attempt to catch cheaters, and so far, we've caught hundreds of players using computers. Secondly, the chess.net software comes built in with "task-switching" notification. IE: if your opponent is swapping windows, you'll know it. Admittedly this might point to some ICQ chatters (not cheaters), but we can tell the difference.. this is merely used as a confirmation.. it's the LAST thing I look at when I'm deciding if a player used a computer. IMO, chess.net has fewer computer cheats / human players than any other internet chessplaying facility free or paid for. Lets face it.. many of these (c)heaters are *really* bad at what they do. There are only a few really clever computer cheats left on the net. Between the pace of the game, the rating, the "under 3 min rating", and the TC preferred by the user, (combined with task-switching and analysis of the game)... many of these guys simply have no clue. I don't even argue with them anymore. I feel no need to justify my decision to +computer a player.
