Wow, 2005 what a year has it been for computer chess!
Shredder used to be the gold standard, but...

The new chess engines:
Hydra, the hardware monster especially strangling GM Michael Adams.
Zappa wins the 2005 WCCC but doesn't come commercially to the public.
Fruit, 2.1 is free with source code. Later 2.2 and 2.2.1 make a leap. It also
wins 2nd in the 2005 WCCC.
Toga II, a freeware and a derivate of Fruit has improvements on 1.0 and 1.1.
Rybka, possibly a quantum leap on middlegame positions.
Spike wins the 1st ever Chess960 tournament.

The old chess engines:
Shredder, version 10 should come out soon but the competition above is fierce.
Fritz 9 goes above Shredder 9 but not enough for the new chess engines.
Junior 9 which plays well against Shredder doesn't go well enough against the
new chess engines.

I am excited to see new and old engines fighting it out.
Jonathan
